OnePlus unveiled the OnePlus 2 - its second-generation, low-cost, top-tier smartphone - earlier this year, and shortly after that, the Chinese company confirmed yet another OnePlus phone will arrive in time for Christmas.
That upcoming device is currently referred to by
the media as the OnePlus Mini, OnePlus 2 Mini, and the OnePlus X. It is
expected to be a smaller and cheaper than the OnePlus 2. It might even launch
by October. To help you figure out exactly what is going on with this device,
we've detailed everything you need to know and laid it out below.
Pocket-lint has rounded up all the rumours, leaks,
and speculation to give you an idea as to when the OnePlus Mini is coming, how
much it'll cost, what it might feature, and more. We also plan to update this
piece regularly over time.
OnePlus Mini: Release date and pricing
Carl Pei, OnePlus' cofounder, told USA Today that
OnePlus is working on a new device that will be available "before the end
of the year" or "hopefully for Christmas." That device is
presumably the OnePlus Mini/OnePlus 2 Mini/OnePlus X.
A recent report from Gizmochina claimed a device
named OnePlus X will arrive in October with a smaller display and the same
processor as the OnePlus 2. It'll cost just $249. Keep in mind the OnePlus 2
costs $329 (£239) - and so we definitely expect the OnePlus Mini to be priced
below $300.
Also, traditionally, "mini" or compact
versions of high-end flagships tend to have lower specs. If that's the case,
the OnePlus Mini could be a mid-range handset with an even more affordable
price tag.
OnePlus Mini: Design and build
Leaked renders posted to Chinese website
Mobile-dad.com have revealed the OnePlus Mini might look similar to other
devices in OnePlus' lineup. They show a black, angular handset with possibly a
metal rim. We can also see the phone's display and camera lens, while another
photo shows the rear.
The phone's rear looks like it could be made of
plastic or rubber. The rear also seems to feature a dual-camera setup with
dual-LED flash, a fingerprint scanner, a speaker grill along the bottom, and a
USB Type-C port. These two leaks haven't been confirmed, so it's possible
they're fake or not accurate.
OnePlus Mini: Specs and hardware
According to GforGames, the OnePlus Mini will
feature a 5-inch Full HD 1080p display cloaked in 2.5D Gorilla Glass 3 or
Gorilla Glass 5. It'll also have an oleophobic and hydrophobic coating. And on
the inside, you can reportedly expect the OnePlus Mini to come with MediaTek
Helio X10 (MT6795T) SoC and 2 GB of LPDDR3 RAM.
Other rumoured specs and hardware bits include 32
GB of eMMC 5.0 local storage, which is expandable via microSDXC, as well as a
13-megapixel Sony IMX258 primary sensor (with a f/2.0 aperture, 4K video
recording at 30 frames per second, and a Dual-Tone LED flash) and a 5-megapixel
front wide-angle sensor with 1080p video recording.
The OnePlus Mini will further have a removable
plastic shell and might feature a 3,000-3,100 mAh non-removable Li-Po battery,
USB Type-C connector with Quick Charge 2.0, an FM radio, a MT6630 wireless SoC,
Bluetooth 4.1, an IR Blaster, a 1.2W front-facing speaker, rear fingerprint
sensor, and a NFC chip that will support Android Pay.
That said, in the past, Gizmochina claimed the
OnePlus Mini will have a Qualcomm Snapdragaon 618 chip or a Snapdragaon 810
chip. It also said the phone will have a 8-megapixel camera on the rear and
front.
OnePlus Mini: Software and features
We expect the OnePlus Mini to run OnePlus' own
Oxygen OS, a forked version of Android. The company's OnePlus 2 smartphone
debuted running the software, so it's safe to assume it'll come to future
OnePlus devices too.
OnePlus Mini: Leaks and renders
Last December, an image of the OnePlus Mini
supposedly leaked online along with information about it sporting a 5-inch
display screen, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 615 chip, and dual 8-megapixel cameras.
